Healthy habits to lighten acne-prone skin

If you suffer from acne, you are not alone. Often misunderstood as a problem experienced only by those going through puberty, acne is actually an incredibly common skin condition that can affect people of all ages. In fact, research has shown that 85% of the population in developed countries have had acne – including myself. While acne is most prevalent in teenagers, it is normal to get spots regularly in adulthood. Acne can play a big role in how you feel, so first of all it is important to emphasize that there is no need to feel ashamed – having acne does not mean that you have poor hygiene habits. It is caused by overproduction of sebum (oil), a process that accelerates during adolescence due to fluctuating hormones. Adult-onset acne can also be down to hormones and can occur completely out of the blue after years of having flawless skin.

Although there is no miracle cure for acne, with time and the right advice, there is something that can be managed. Before you take a closer look at skin care, I recommend seeking advice from your GP. A GP may recommend a topical treatment, antibiotics or a combination, and they will work with skin care to improve your skin. June was Acne Awareness Month, so I want to share some of my tips on how to keep your skin as clear as possible, and hacks to reduce the life of impurities.

Stick to a consistent routine

Start by double cleansing your skin morning and night with a gentle, non-stripping cleanser. The key here is to be gentle and not overwinter or disturb the skin barrier by using drying foam washers. Follow with a non-comedogenic serum (which does not clog the pores). Vitamin A is a good choice as it copes with oil production and speeds up the healing process. Finish your morning routine with a non-comedogenic SPF to protect your skin, which is even more important when using vitamin A.

Include salicylic acid

Salicylic acid is the secret weapon for acne-prone skin. Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid that penetrates the pores to dissolve blockages and helps to deal with pimples before they can start, as well as treating them during the life cycle. This is a potent ingredient, so instead of using it daily, mix a salicylic acid-based cleanser into your routine three nights a week.

Avoid scarring and further irritation by keeping your hands away from an angry red spot. Try wrapping an ice cube in tissue and applying it gently on the spot to cool and relieve inflammation instead.

Avoid makeup when exercising

Exercise-induced acne caused by excess heat, sweating and rubbing is common on the face and body, especially during the summer months. Wipe off sweat with a towel before showering and avoid using heavy make-up when sweating, as this will lead to congestion.

Use appropriate exfoliators

Exfoliating acids can help remove the blockage of clogged pores, reduce the acid mantle (a layer on the skin that repels bacteria and viruses) and remove dead skin cells. Like salicylic acid, azelaic acid has also shown results in the treatment of acne.

And it also applies to pillowcases, phones or anything else that touches your face. Dirt, bacteria and dead skin cells can accumulate on these surfaces and cause clogged skin if not cleaned regularly.

Nourish your skin from within

Support your skin internally with a healthy, balanced diet and with the help of a skin supplement.
