‘Top Gun: Maverick’ will not start streaming yet, sorry

Top Gun: Maverick hit theaters in time for the Memorial Days kickoff of the summer. With the promise of rave reviews and a wave of moviegoers flocking to big movies, it has passed $ 1 billion at the box office worldwide. And on Sunday it comes to its 45th day in cinemas, the point after other films from the same studio have started streaming.

But do not expect Top Gun: Maverick to play by these rules.

Where will Top Gun: Maverick Stream?

Top Gun: Maverick expected to stream first Paramount Plus. The film is distributed by Paramount Pictures, which is owned by the same parent company as Paramount Plus.

When is the release date of Top Gun: Maverick for streaming?

Paramount has not set a release date for streaming for the Top Gun sequel, but you should expect to have a longer wait. The company’s past practices – and comments on Top Gun: Maverick’s release strategy in general – paint the picture of a company willing to keep it in theaters for an unusually long period of time.

For previous live-action movies, Paramount has tended to give them at least 45 days in theaters only before they are available for streaming on Paramount Plus. If Top Gun: Maverick followed the 45-day timeline, it would be available for streaming on Monday, the day after completing its 45th day in theaters. Other Paramount movies – February’s Jackass Forever, March’s The Lost City and April’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2 – all came to Paramount Plus on the 46th day after coming to theaters.

But Paramount does not make movies available for streaming as lubricated. Scream, which hit theaters late last year, took about a week longer, in about 53 days.

More importantly, Paramount has said they want to keep Top Gun: Maverick in theaters longer than the other movies.

In May, Paramount chief Bob Bakish indicated Top Gun: Maverick would not follow the 45-day timeline, according to a New York Times report. He repeated comments from the company’s CFO a couple of weeks earlier. “There are certain films that are really made for the theatrical experience. Top Gun is a good example of that,” CFO Naveen Chopra said at an investor conference. “You should see that movie in a movie theater and it will stay in theaters for a long time.”

How long the “longer period” lasts, there are some who can guess for the time being.

Will it be “free” to stream?

Some good news is that, yes, you probably will not be charged for any extra stream Top Gun: Maverick. Paramount Plus has never charged an extra fee to watch a movie on the service. And although it has two different levels, it has never “paid” for a movie behind the more expensive membership level.

But Paramount Plus requires a paid subscription, so nothing on the service is literally free – unless you see it while signing up for a free trial. Paramount Plus offers a seven-day free trial standard for all new members.
