Welcome back to “Spotlight”, and as alum at the University of Wisconsin, let me be among the first to welcome the USC Trojans and UCLA Bruins to the absurdly named Big Ten Conference (it has not had 10 member universities since the first Gulf War ) in what appears to be part of a massive shift in college athletics, partly caused by the weakening of the NCAA. From the USC and UCLA perspective, the move makes a lot of (dollars and) sense. Not only will these schools have greater exposure through the central and eastern time zones, so they can shed a wider network of recruitment, but they will also be the recipients of a Big Ten media rights pot that could approach $ 1 billion. From my perspective, I love the idea of ​​having visiting football players accustomed to the pleasant climate of Southern California visiting my badgers at Camp Randall Stadium in sub-zero temperatures (On, Wisconsin!). What could it mean more generally for college athletics? it looks more and more like the “powerhouse” schools of college athletics are coming together in two or three self-sufficient mega-conferences, pushing the floating NCAA further out of the limelight.   • Songwriters won a landslide victory over music streaming services when the Copyright Royalty Board’s decision to increase streaming fees from 10.5 percent and 15.1 percent was upheld. Seems fair, given that multi-streaming services make a disproportionate amount of money from the use of songwriters’ works. But do not worry about the multi-billion dollar power services, they will manage (and probably pass on the additional costs to consumers). “Inflation,” am I right?!?!
