Quarterback Bye Week Analysis: Draft Strategy and Streaming Goals (2022 Fantasy Football)

“The helpers are coming! The color hatches are coming! “

The 2022 NFL season is just a few weeks away, and the bye weeks are just around the corner. Bye weeks begin in week 6 and go through week 14. However, no team is saying goodbye to week 12 due to the Thanksgiving triple headline. With eight bye weeks to account for, fantasy players need to do their homework and plan for bye week replacements.

In this article, the top 15 quarterbacks, according to FantasyPros Expert Consensus Rankings, will be tagged as “Starting Quarterbacks” to cover a typical 12-team fantasy league. I have provided two goal streamers for each bye week to help you find the best matchup for your starting quarterbacks farewell. Pay attention to the repeated names in this article and the defenses you want to choose this season.

Also, make sure you take advantage of FantasyPros’ Bye Week Cheat Sheet and Quarterback by Committee Finder before your draft. These are excellent tools to help you win the draft and the league.

Week 6

Yes, Carson Wentz is a very unpopular player these days. However, he was QB13 last year, averaging 15.2 fantasy points per game. Wentz averaged 0.1 fantasy points per game more than Carr in 2021. Among quarterbacks with at least eight games played, Wentz QB15 was on a points-per-game basis. More importantly, the fight against the Bears is appealing. They have a young secondary and replaced Khalil Mack this offseason. Chicago is a defense you want to stream against if possible all year long.

Before contracting a torn ACL, Jameis Winston played arguably the best football of his career. He threw 14 touchdowns and just three interceptions in seven games. More importantly, Winston put up those numbers with a terrible receiving corps. However, he wants Jarvis Landry, Chris Olave and hopefully a healthy Michael Thomas this season. Although the settlement against the Bengals is not good, this game should give high goals. Thus, Winston provides many scoring opportunities in a penalty shootout against the Bengals.

Week 7

Before the start of the 2021 season, many had Ryan Tannehill as a low-end QB1 in the rankings. After achieving an average career high of 21.5 fantasy points per game in 2020, Tannehill averaged only 15.8 fantasy points per game last year. Still, he had two of his top three games last year against the Colts. Tannehill had an average of 21.3 fantasy points per game in those games, and threw three touchdowns in both games. Losing AJ Brown damages Tannehill’s fantasy value. However, he scored 21.5 fantasy points in the Week 3 game against the Colts when Brown only played 11.1% of the snaps. Tannehill is worth considering in week 7.

Although he is not the most appealing quarterback, Jared Goff has at times been insidiously good for fantasy teams. Despite a limited supporting role last season, he scored over 16.5 fantasy points in almost half of his matches. Goff also had a solid ratio of 19 touchdowns to eight interceptions in 2021, his best performance since 2018. Hopefully Jameson Williams will be ready to play by week 7. But even without the former Alabama star receiver, Goff has the weapons to take advantage of of an inconsistent Dallas defense.

Week 8

The fact that Justin Fields did not make the top 15 list shows how deep the quarterback position is this year. There have been many reports talking about Fields’ improvement this offseason, and many expect a breakout season in 2022. He ended the 2021 season by scoring 16.9 or more fantasy points in four of the last five games. Part of his success in these battles was his quick ability. Fields averaged 56 rushing yards per game in those five competitions. Meanwhile, the Cowboys gave away 3.3 fantasy points per game on the ground to the quarterbacks last season. Fields has the top five upside in week 8.

Miami’s offense last year was far from appealing. The offensive line had problems, and the receiving corps outside Jaylen Waddle and Mike Gesicki were dull. However, the Dolphins improved both areas this offseason with the addition of Tyreek Hill, Terron Armstead and several others. Now everything is under pressure on Tua Tagovailoa to prove that he is the guy. While few expect him to be a weekly starter, Tagovailoa has a lot of appeal as a streamer. The Week 8 match against a young Detroit defense could be Tagovailoa’s best match of the year.

Week 9

After throwing three touchdowns in Week 1, Trevor Lawrence had just seven touchdown passes over the next 15 games. However, he should have a solid second season after the Jaguars added more weapons in the free agency, with the headline Christian Kirk. Although he will not be a weekly starting quarterback in 2022, Lawrence will be a popular name in waiver articles throughout the year. The Raiders gave up nearly 17 fantasy points per game to the quarterbacks last season and lost their top cornerback this offseason. Lawrence could offer a top-five upside this week if the Jacksonville offense clicks.

Historically, you want to avoid streaming against the Patriots. However, their defense suffered a massive blow this offseason after JC Jackson signed with the Chargers. The Patriots used a couple of midfield choices on the cornerback, but did very little to replace Jackson. Therefore, the Patriots can become a team to target when they stream this season. Meanwhile, Matt Ryan will not be among the top 20 in most rankings. The Colts have limited proven weapons in the passing game and an elite running back. However, Ryan is an appealing powerhouse in Week 9, thanks to Michael Pittman’s fight against an under-paired cornerback.

Week 10

Fields makes his second appearance in this article. Make sure you plan your farewell weeks, as Fields is likely to be on a list at this time of season. However, he is the best streamer this week if he is on the exemption thread. The Lions gave up 31 passing touchdowns last season, the third most in the NFL. Although they have made some improvements in their defense this offseason, the Lions still have a young unit Fields should benefit from in Week 10.

The Texans will be one of the worst teams in the NFL this season. While their attack lacks superstar players, Brandin Cooks leads a young but talented receiver core. More importantly, Davis Mills will have no competition for his starting role and many opportunities to score fantasy points. Houston will be in a negative game script most of the year and chase points. Meanwhile, the Giants lost several members of their secondary this offseason, including pro bowler James Bradberry. Mills should have easy to cut up a poor New York secondary.

Week 11

  • Starter Quarterbacks on a Bye: Tom Brady (TB)
  • Goal Streamers: Carson Wentz (WAS) at HOU, Jared Goff (DET) at NYG

Once again, Wentz makes the goal streamer list. Houston Secondary is a young unit led by novice Derek Stingley Jr. and Jalen Pitre. They lack an elite passing rusher up front and a linebacker. Houston will be a team you will choose for the entire season when you stream. In the meantime, the commanders’ violations will have to develop chemistry early in the season. However, they should be in sync at this time of year and ready to take apart Houston’s defense.

Goff makes his second appearance in the article, thanks to a great match against the Giants. While they have a few talented pass-rushers led by rookie Kayvon Thibodeaux, the Giants have a defense below average. Their secondary lost several starters this offseason, and they are missing a No. 1 caliber. Hopefully, novice Williams comes 100% from a torn ACL at this point and can help Goff destroy a bad New York secondary.

Week 13

  • Starter Quarterbacks on a Bye: Kyler Murray (ARI)
  • Goal Streamers: Tua Tagovailoa (MIA) at SF, Trevor Lawrence (JAC) at DET

The 49ers have a talented front seven in defense. But their secondary at all last season. While they added Charvarius Ward in free agency, he can not cover Hill and Waddle at the same time. The rest of the cornerback in San Francisco is young and inconsistent. Provided that the offensive line can keep him upright, Tagovailoa should be able to take advantage of the 49ers’ secondary, thanks to his excellent receiving core.

Lawrence is on the list of streamers for the second time in the article, thanks to a great match against the Lions. The Detroit defense has some potential stars, led by passer Aidan Hutchinson. However, this is a defense you want to choose this season. Goff and the Lions will probably be able to score against Jaguar’s defense. Thus, putting pressure on Lawrence to set up points. While this is a matchup between two of the projected inferior teams in the NFL, both quarterbacks are solid power options.

Week 14

  • Starter Quarterbacks on a Bye: Aaron Rodgers (GB)
  • Goal Streamers: Davis Mills (HOU) at DAL, Trevor Lawrence (JAC) at TEN

One thing to consider when streaming quarterbacks is teams with many opportunities to be in a negative game script. Therefore, why so many quarterbacks on bad teams have made this article. Mills is on the streamer list for the second time for good reason, with a game against the Cowboys. Dallas should have Michael Gallup back well before this time of season and can score as desired on Houston’s defense. Thus, Mills will have many opportunities to score fantasy points thanks to a negative game script and a potentially long period of garbage time.

The No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft makes his third and final appearance on the list. Like Mills, Lawrence and the Jaguars will have many opportunities to chase points this season. While struggling in the Week 14 game against the Titans, Lawrence had his best game of the year in the Week 5 game, scoring a career-high 21.7 fantasy points against Tennessee. Meanwhile, the Titans gave up 263.8 passing yards per game last season, the seventh most in the NFL. Lawrence should have a productive fantasy performance against division rivals.
