Meta Three is a new 360-degree camera that produces remarkable 12.5K resolution videos using four vertically oriented 6K sensors.

The state-of-the-art virtual reality camera (VR) also boasts very low parallax (stitch problems), ProRes and RAW, electronic focusing and live streaming.

Not to be confused with Facebook’s parent company, Meta. The camera company is a British outfit, and it offers Meta Three for as much as $ 42,000.

“Meta Three not only has a 12.5k resolution, but it is sharp, the details from this camera are fantastic. It is also very controllable – we can set focus and aperture digitally and on the go,” the company writes.

The company says it uses “high quality glass” for the pixel-rich 360 camera. The data generated can be stored by either four CFast 2.0 cards or four SSDs connected via USB-C.

The company recommends a Varjo VR headset, an extremely advanced headset, to get the full experience of what Meta Three can achieve.

Low parallax

Anyone who has used a 360-degree camera will be aware that they are prone to stitching problems. This is when the different lenses that combine to create a 360-degree image meet and leave a clear line on the video or image.

Meta Three uses four lenses, but the company claims that “we actually have them so close that they sew beautifully.”

“In addition, since these lenses are so sharp all over the plane, they look amazing no matter where on the overlap you choose to sew them,” Meta adds.

Before Meta Three came Meta One and Two. All three cameras can record in ProRes 422 and it provides the ability to record a high bit rate of h265.

“It’s important, not just in pixel quality, but in the color details. You can get the cinematic quality from the character,” the company says.

Live streaming

Meta Three can stream live in 8k either via the Ethernet port or the HDMI ports using third-party software.

The company also offers editing software, Meta Controller, for PC and Mac.

“The controller gives you detailed control over the camera, from the selection of variable frame rate settings, frame profiles, encoding options, focus, full shutter, WB and ISO controls along with a whole host of other settings and features,” writes Meta.

“We show you battery voltage, camera temperature and quick shortcuts to the key features you want to adjust quickly.”

YouTuber Hugh Hou got hold of one of only two Meta Threes that exist right now, where he showed off the incredibly high dynamic range and the razor-sharp image.
