How do you become friends with a serial killer?

The first two episodes of the six-episode series are now being streamed on Apple TV +. Subsequent episodes will premiere globally every Friday.

Percolating from the first moments, thanks to a minor-tone musical score by Mowgli, off-kilter shot selection by director Michael Roskam, an accurate nerve-wracking script by mysterious novelist Dennis Lehane, and the engaging presence of Taron Egerton as a charming drug dealer, Blackbird soon coming down to business by hand.

Jimmy Keane, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison in the late 1990s, is offered the chance to “get free from prison” – all he has to do is assume a new criminal identity, be transferred to a prison with maximum security and become friends with suspicious series. killer Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser) before being released on appeal.

Simple, right?

Throughout the first two episodes, both of which are now being streamed, Keane is portrayed as a criminal with an engaging manner that smiles freely and easily makes friends. However, he is not necessarily the violent type, and is definitely out of his league compared to the hard-nosed convicts who now surround him, day in and day out. With only minimal training, he must present himself as a convicted type with maximum security, one who is more brutal, wild and deadly, without committing further crimes behind the walls, which will invalidate the offer of judicial change of sentence.

Prior to his arrest, Larry Hall, the suspected serial killer, had been known locally as a serial confessor, and claimed to have committed crimes for which no evidence could be located. So, through diligent investigative work, Brian Miller (Greg Kinnear) lays the groundwork for making a confession that appears to stand up in court, only to be suspected by Larry Hall of other authorities.

He joins forces with Lauren McCauley (Sepideh Moafi) from the FBI to investigate further, all the while McCauley and her boss (Robert Wisdom) try to find out where the bodies are from Larry Hall via undercover excavation of Keane. While Keane tries to adapt to his new circumstances, a new development (in the third episode) puts his life in greater danger than ever before, and the schedule gets stuck.

Keane’s father is portrayed by the great Ray Liotta. Knowing that Liotta died recently makes his performance even more valuable, but it’s not easy to see him play an aging former police officer who is still proud of his son, even though he hates what the kid ended up doing. Seeing Liotta give life to a man who is aware of his own imperfections and struggles to help his son, after all, pierced my soul.

If the story sounds complicated in writing, it does not play like that on screen, thanks to Dennis Lehane’s careful but completely absorbing writing. Lehane developed the series from a memoir by James Keane and Hillel Levin, and the show is introduced as “inspired by a true story”, which puts it on solid ground dramatically. Lehane is a master plotter, whom he has demonstrated time and time again in his densely populated, hard-to-read mystery novels, including mysterious river, Gone baby Gone and Shutter Island.

His experience of writing for the screen goes back to The cord – that is, the Robert Wisdom connection – and extends to The case (2014), which he wrote for the screen based on his own short story and was directed by – another connection here – Michael Roskam. Lehane’s other credits include a couple of episodes of crime series Outsider and also Mr. Mercedes.

Therefore, it is not exactly a surprise it Blackbird is compulsive and compelling, although not structured like other limited series. I got to binge all six episodes in advance, and they flew by.

It is not because events take place in a way that teases without keeping what is promised. It’s more like knowing your car is going to crash sometime soon, except you do not know exactly when it will happen or if there is anything you can do to prevent or avoid it.

Braking will not make a small difference. All you know is that the crash is going to happen; it’s going to hurt and it could kill you.
