Following reports that Apple TV + submitted a bid to acquire NFL Sunday Ticket rights last month, the streamer has received a boost following an admission by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
Goodell has reportedly confirmed that the Sunday Ticket will be available via a streaming service next time, after a 30-year period on DirecTV. Apple TV + reportedly placed a bid last month, with the NFL estimated to have more than $ 2 billion in exchange for content rights. At the time, many were confused as to why an agreement had not already been reached.
Many observers, including some of the bidders themselves, have expressed surprise that an agreement has not been reached now. The delay has to do with the mix of assets and associated partnership talks that ended in the agreement talks, said two of the people. If the discussions were only about the Sunday Ticket, an agreement would probably have already been reached, said one of the people.
Deadline now reports that Goodell says that the terms of the agreement “will be completed by the autumn” with Apple TV + and Amazon probably two of the largest players involved.
“I clearly believe we will move to a streaming service,” the commissioner told CNBC. He spoke from Sun Valley, ID, where he attends the Allen & Co. conference with a number of media and technology executives, many of whom are NFL licensees.
The Sunday ticket will give subscribers of the winning streamer access to every game played on a Sunday. Regardless of where they are, all of the 2022 season’s Sunday matches will be streamed – although it remains to be seen what the status will be for the international audience. However, Apple streams baseball games around the world.
While the commissioner had previously indicated that the NFL was leaning towards streaming, at the time it was assumed that a kind of agreement would be entered into that would also include DirecTV. Nor does it seem to have been completely ruled out after the latest news, although the Commissioner’s use of the word “relocation” may give us a hint.
