We recommend … 6 great movies – 5 Cent Cines first half of 2022 reviews

When we take an overview of the first six months of 2022, when we have often regretted the lack of good films (we are not alone in those thoughts), we still found many who deserved a showing. Interesting that 4 are foreign, and 5 are “small”. “Everything Everywhere All At Once” is the biggest movie of the gang.

To get started, here are the 6 we agreed on (with difficulty, as TWO film critics – we tried to have a list of 5, but gave up), in chronological order by our review dates:

“Little mom” ★★★ 1/2

“Driving my car” ★★★ 1/2

“A hero” ★★★

“Happens” ★★★ 1/2

“A lot” ★★★ 1/2

“Everything everywhere at once” ★★★ 1/2

While all appear on many “best” lists, their budgets range from $ 245,000 (“Mass”) to $ 25 million (“Everything Everywhere All At Once”) and worldwide ticket offices from $ 230,000 (again, “Mass”) to $ 91 million (again) , “Everything…).

“Little mom” is from the French author and director Céline Sciamma, who also wrote and directed the fantastic «Portrait of a Lady on Fire» (2019). Her latest film has a slightly sci-fi or magical realism quality – and it should not work. But it does. Fantastic 8 year old identical twin actresses. If you like statistics, the budget was $ 2.8 million; worldwide box 2.0 million dollars.

“Driving my car” got a lot of 2022 Oscar buzz; it was nominated for both Best Picture and Best International Film – for Japan (it won the latter). The long and sluggish pace will deter some (we are generally all too short), but we found it “surprisingly engaging.” Statistics: budget – not published; worldwide box $ 15 million.

“A hero” (Ghahreman) we said it was “not a simple clock”, but concluded (with pleasure): “Life is messy. Unknown people. The title, ironic.” From one of Iran’s best directors, Asghar Farhadi (“A Separation”). Iran was not about to nominate it for best international film. Statistics: budget – not published; worldwide box $ 2.8 million.

“Happening” (The Event), about “the disease that affects only women … and makes them housewives,” comes at a favorable time, and deals with the criminalization of abortion. A warning story based on a true story from 1960s France. Statistics: budget $ 5.2 million; worldwide box $ 1.55 million.

“A lot” is another film that reflects heartbreaking, inexplicable contemporary events. It unfolds slowly and gently. For this reason, our review does not give away the central action. We said, “it is difficult to imagine a better, more powerful, more complex and bolder presentation of the ‘problem’.” Statistics: budget $ 145,000 (that’s right, in thousands; taken in 14 days, interior scenes of 4). Worldwide box $ 230,000 (well, at least it made money!).

“Everything everywhere at once” is the current social media girlfriend. One of the two film critics had to speak into the rating we gave it; it took her some time to get over the profits of martial arts. When she was over she agreed that it “rises above the kung fu theaters and creates the heart – a touch of Hollywood – in this remarkable story”. The performances are great; do not miss Jamie Lee Curtis, whom we did not recognize before the credits rolled. Statistics: budget $ 25 million; worldwide box 91 million dollars.
