Varta Recharge Accu Power 1000mAh review: Lots of power

Varta Recharge Accu Power 1000mAh review: Lots of power

Super powerful batteries, Varta Recharge Accu Power 1000mAh delivers more juice than much of the competition. Still, at this price, the competition is intense: there are batteries with higher capacity, or those that retain the charge longer, available for similar money.

Cons

  • Retain only 65% power after 12 months

  • TypeThese NiMH AAA batteries are rechargeable

  • CyclesVarta does not explicitly state how many charge cycles these batteries can withstand

Introduction

While most AAA rechargeable batteries are around the 750mAh mark, the Varta Recharge Accu Power is 1000mAh devices with significantly higher power.

This makes these batteries a potentially interesting choice for those who need more power to power high-drainage devices, such as toys or flashlights.

Design and costs

  • Hold up 65% of the power for 12 months
  • Lasts in hundreds of loads

Most rechargeable batteries are designed to hold charge for a decent period of time. On average, batteries will retain around 80% of the charge during a year, while Varta Recharge Accu Power 1000mAh holds 65% of the power. That still makes them a decent enough option to charge and use them when convenient, but I expect to see higher storage.

Varta does not say how many charge cycles these batteries can handle, although the number will be in the hundreds. If you need batteries with a guaranteed life, the Ansmann Micro AAA 1100mAh will last for 1000 cycles.

Performance

  • High capacity
  • Consistent performance

I put the Varta Recharge Accu Power 1000mAh through my standard tests using an Ansmann Energy XC3000 battery tester. For my first test, I measured the starting voltage of the batteries, which must be a minimum of 1.2V. Here the batteries started at 1.33V, which is a good result.

Then I measured the capacity using a test with high drainage (600mA +/- 20% with a cut-off voltage of 0.94V). To begin with, I measured the capacity to 945mAh, which is just slightly below the nominal capacity.

Then I ran 50 discharge and charge cycles, and took capacity readings every 10 cycles to see how well these batteries perform over time. As you can see from the graph, apart from the weak peak on the 20th cycle, the performance remained relatively flat, just slightly below the nominal value.

Should you buy it?

If you need super high performance, these high capacity AAA batteries will meet your needs.

If you need higher charge storage, there are batteries that will offer decent power even after years of being charged and used.

Last thoughts

These are high-capacity AAA batteries that are generally ahead of the competition. If you need a lot of power, the Varta Recharge Accu Power 1000mAh can appeal. However, the Ansmann Micro AAA 1100mAh performed better in our tests, so I would have chosen these batteries over these Varta devices. If you need long-lasting power, the Eneloop AAA will hold power for a long time and can be charged 2100 times.

How we test

Unlike other websites, we test all rechargeable batteries we evaluate thoroughly over an extended period of time. We use standard tests to compare functions correctly. We will always tell you what we find. We never accept money to evaluate a product.

Find out more about how we test in our ethical guidelines.

We use an Ansmann Energy XC 3000 to drain batteries, so we can test the capacity in mAh. After the first run, we charge and charge 50 times, and measure the capacity every tenth race.

We measure the starting voltage of the batteries, and check that the starting voltage is at least 1.2V.
