After the success of its first season, Disney+ has officially given it another renewal The Santa Clauses, the sequel series to the hit film trilogy from the 1990s and 2000s. The series, which has the main role Tim Allen as Scott Calvin / Santa Claus, and Elizabeth Mitchell while his wife, Carol/Mrs Claus – both reprising their roles from the original trilogy – sees Scott consider stepping down from the role after nearly thirty years on the job.
Allen first took the role in the 1995s Santa Claus, in which he starred as a self-important toymaker and businessman, separated from his ex-wife and son. One evening, after an accident on his roof, he is thrust into the role of Santa Claus, at first against his wishes before embracing the responsibility.
Mitchell joined the franchise in the sequel, Santa Claus 2in which she played the principal of Scott’s son, Charlie (Eric Lloyd). In the film, Scott tries to cure himself of securing a wife before losing his role as Santa Claus in a race against time, and eventually wins her over with the magic of Christmas and a little old-fashioned charm.
Disney has described season one with this synopsis:
In season one of Santas, Scott Calvin returns after nearly thirty years as Santa, and he’s as happy as ever. But as Christmas declines in popularity, so does his Santa magic. Scott struggles to keep up with the demands of his job as well as being there for his family. After discovering that there is a way to step down from the position, Scott considers stepping down as Santa and finding a worthy successor so he can be a better father and husband.
“This franchise has had a lasting impact on so many families and has truly become a part of their annual holiday traditions,” said Hey Davis, president of Disney Branded Television. “Bringing it back as a series has been a true gift, and I’m grateful to our producing partners at 20th Television and, of course, Tim Allen and the team, that we have another reason to celebrate this holiday season.”
The limited series was announced as an older sequel in January 2022, and began filming in March before wrapping up quickly in June. The show is executive produced by Jack Burditt (30 Rock, Modern Family, Frasier, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and Allen next to it Kevin Hench, Richard Baker, Jason Winer and Jon Radler, all of whom return in their roles for the second season.
The Santa Claus franchise was wildly popular, well-received overall, and a major financial hit for Disney with the three films returning nearly $500 million at the box office. In addition, the films have become holiday staples around the world, and are regularly played on TV during the holiday season.
