Peter Pan & Wendy Footage teases a magical return to Neverland

Nobody likes nostalgia like Disney; over its hundred-year history, the brand has been a mainstay for children of all ages. The brand loves to tickle fans’ nostalgic bones by turning its classic animated films into live-action movies and has done so with success, and while there are a couple of such highly anticipated live-action movies lined up, Disney+ has given us the first look at the upcoming Peter Pan and Wendy in its slate trailer from 2023.

In the new trailer, Ever AndersonWendy’s Wendy is seen on her first flight and Alexander Molony’s Peter Pan’s first meeting with the Darling brothers is showcased. Undeniably, the film will feature some action sequences as Wendy is seen sword fighting with some pirates aboard Captain Hook’s ship. The reimagining of the classic story feels quite modern at this first glance.

The feature is controlled by a director David Lowery, who wrote scripts on the side Toby Halbrooks. The director has previously revealed that to Collider Peter Pan and Wendy is the “first film I’ve made from an adult perspective. He explained: “I think, personally, it’s my favorite thing I’ve ever made, which I didn’t expect going into it, but it is. I’ve never been as in love with a movie as I am with this one… I just love this film. It’s the most personal thing I’ve ever made.”

While the inclusion of Wendy’s name in the title seems like a minor change, it’s something to note in the grand scheme of things. Disney is constantly working to adapt its classic stories in a modern form. One such bet is the decision to throw Halle Bailey as Ariel in the upcoming live-action feature The Little Mermaid. During the D23 showcase, Anderson explained that her character is being treated as an “equal” to Peter Pan, so instead of being a female lead, Wendy will be a co-protagonist in this journey through Neverland. Furthermore, Jude Law revealed that his version of Captain Hook comes with a dedicated backstory, where he and Peter were at one point allies.

The film stars Molony as Peter Pan, Anderson as Wendy Darling, Yara Shahidi as Tinker Bell, Law who feared Captain Hook, Joshua Pickering as John Darling, and Jacob Jupe as Michael Darling, along with Alan Tudyk and Molly Parkerwho play parents to Darling children, George and Mary respectively.

Peter Pan and Wendy currently has no set release date, but will debut on Disney+ sometime in 2023. You can check out the new trailer below:
