Love and Thunder, ‘You have to see these shorts at Disney +

Marvel Cinematic Universe is a rich tapestry, and each new movie and episode weaves even more colorful fabric into the carpet? Ok, unfounded metaphor aside, the point still stands: we are 14 years inside the MCU and it has grown into a strange and wonderful place. It is populated with all kinds of characters, including wonderful rock friends and vengeful butchers. Good ol ‘Basket and gruesome Gorr are just two characters in the new film Thor: Love and thunder – but I’m not here to talk about them. It’s another character that director Taika Waititi fell into Love and thunder which will make a subgroup of very online Marvel fans cringe with delight. Who is that character?

SPOILERS in front of!

As established in Avengers: Endgame, the surviving Asgardians have created a home on earth in a charming Norwegian village which they have called New Asgard. There the Asgardians and other cosmic refugees live in peace under King Valkyrie’s watchful eye. Thor: Love and thunder spends some time in New Asgard, shows us the local lifestyle and reveals how the decidedly above-ground city fits into the earth. It includes a thriving tourism industry! And who better to guide those tours than a guy who actually lived with Thor? That’s right: Thor’s roommate Darryl is in it Thor: Love and thunder! He appears as a tour guide, and later works with Valkyrie to try to regain order after Gorr’s attack on New Asgard. It’s a really fast cameo, but it’s great to see Darryl on the big screen.

Who’s Darryl? He’s the gentle Australian (played by Daley Pearson) who posted an ad for a roommate and ended up with a Thor. He first appeared in a series of shorts directed by Taika Waititi during the production of Thor: Ragnarok.

The first two, Team Thor del 1 and Part 2was a comic, mockumentary style look at what Thor was doing during the events of Captain America: Civil War. They describe Darryl and Thor’s uneventful but chaotic time together as roommates. It turns out that it is very difficult to live with someone whose job is to “save the world” and who measures time in centuries instead of weeks.

After Ragnaroka third card Team Darryl – was released, this time pairing Darryl with an even more worrying roommate: the Grand Master.

Remember that these shorts were never taken seriously as cannon. Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok even contradicts the shorts by showing that Thor was not on earth below Civil Warbut was instead on a crusade over the cosmos and fought against Sakaar. Thor: Love and thunder, on the other hand, marks Darryl’s true MCU debut. He’s in a movie! It does not get more canonical than that! Does that mean it Team Thor and Team Darryl is cannon? Or does it mean that these shorts are variants of Darryl, Thor, Grandmaster and Bruce Banner? Or is this when we all need to repeat to ourselves “it’s just a sprawling multimedia franchise, we really should just relax”?

Yes, we should probably just relax.

Thor: Love and thunder is now in theaters, and you can stream all the Darryl shorts at Disney + in the Thor collection.
