Is it worth switching to the Disney+ ad-supported plan?

Disney+ Basic offers the same content at a lower price, but is $3 less worth watching ads while watching your favorite shows and movies?

Watching your favorite movies and TV shows commercial-free was one of the main reasons people signed up for streaming platforms. But slowly but surely, ads are making their way into your binge-watching sessions.

Disney+ has joined popular streaming platforms and launched its ad-supported subscription plan called Disney+ Basic. You get the same content at a lower price, and you have to wade through ads every now and then. While paying less always sounds good, is Disney+’s ad-supported subscription worth it? Keep reading to find out.

What you should know about Disney+’s ad-supported plan

On December 8, 2022, Disney+ launched its ad-supported subscription, called Disney+ Basic. Disney+ Basic is only available to US subscribers at the time of writing, but the company plans to roll it out to all regions gradually.

As you might expect, at $7.99/month, Disney+ Basic is the cheapest subscription plan available. According to Disney, there will be around four minutes of ads per hour.

Looks like you’re not missing out on too much with Disney+ Basic. Unlike Netflix Basic with Ads, you’ll still get access to the entire Disney+ catalog. Also, if you have a compatible device, you can stream in 4K Ultra HD quality. You can also watch content simultaneously on up to four devices.

However, the Disney+ Basic plan has a downside. Because the ads are loaded at the time of viewing, the plan does not support offline viewing.

If you want to skip the ads and download Disney+ content, you’ll need to spend a few more dollars and subscribe to Disney+ Premium for $10.99/month. You should know that Disney will automatically upgrade your subscription to Disney+ Premium on the next billing cycle.

So if you don’t want to spend more on your subscription, you should manually downgrade your plan to Disney+ Basic.

Should you switch to Disney+ Basic?

Aside from the four minutes of ads per hour and the inability to download movies and TV shows, there seems to be no other reason why you shouldn’t get a Disney+ Basic subscription. For $3 less, you still get all the amazing content Disney+ has to offer and many features that other ad-supported subscription plans don’t even consider.

Sure, ads are always annoying and they seem to get in the way just when the movie or show you’re watching is getting good. However, that is not necessarily a bad thing. You can still use the break to stretch a bit or do exercises to avoid strain on the eyes.

Disney+ with or without ads?

In the end, the choice is yours. If you watch Disney+ a few times a week, the ads shouldn’t bother you. On the other hand, if you think the ads will ruin your viewing experience, it makes sense to spend the extra $3.

Even if you spend the extra money, there are other ways to save money on your online subscriptions so you don’t go over budget.
