The Sanderson sisters are almost back! Nearly 30 years after the trio of witches ravaged the sleepy city of Salem in an attempt to become immortal, Disney + viewers are returning to Salem this fall for the long-awaited Hokus pokus follow-up, Hokus Pokus 2.
Although rumors of a potential sequel have been circulating for years, the Disney Black Fame did not light the film until December 2020, when the company announced during Disney’s Investor Day event that Hokus Pokus 2 was at work. The film serves as a sequel to the original 1993 film, which told the story of three witches who return to Salem after being burned at the stake 300 years earlier. Although the film was not a critical or commercial success, it quickly became a cult classic and has been a regular part of Halloween movie screenings in recent decades.
Now, 29 years later Hokus pokus first had its theatrical debut, the Sanderson sisters are back. After Dani, Max, Allison and Binx defeated the Sanderson sisters in 1993, a trio of new characters will find themselves going up against the scary witches in Hokus Pokus 2. According to Disney +’s official synopsis, “it’s been 29 years since someone lit a Black Flame Candle and revived 17th-century sisters who were executed for practicing witchcraft, and they are looking for revenge. Now there are up to three high school students to be found. “How can they stop the greedy witches from creating a new kind of chaos in Salem before midnight on All Hallow’s Eve?”
‘Hocus Pocus 2’ Trailer
Ahead of the premiere on September 30, Disney released the first full-length trailer on June 28 Hokus Pokus 2. The trailer opened with a trio of girls – Becca, Cassie and Izzy – preparing to celebrate one of their birthdays with the typical “birthday ritual” of a scary movie marathon, even though the celebration came with an ominous warning from a store owner telling them , “the legend says that it is on the 16th birthday that a witch gets her powers.” Later that evening, as two of the girls read a spell, the ground splits and the Black Flame Candle lights up, with Winifred announcing, “Unlock your kids. Who’s coming back from the original Hocus Pocus?
Some Hokus pokus the sequel would not have been complete without at least a few of the original cast, and fans of the 1993 film would like to know that a number of the original actors are being used to repeat their roles in Hokus Pokus 2. It was early confirmed that Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy would repeat their roles as Winifred Sanderson, Sara Sanderson and Mary Sanderson 29 years after they first took up their broomsticks. Disney has since released a number of photos and clips that tease the trip back into action.
However, the Sanderson sisters are not the only ones returning. Doug Jones is confirmed to repeat his role as Billy Butcherson, Winifred’s zombified ex-lover who specifically chose to side with the children in Hokus pokus and help end the Sanderson sisters.
Who will not return?
Unfortunately, not all original cast members will return. The four characters at the heart of the 1993 film – Dani and Max Dennison, Allison Watts and Thackeray Binx – are not related to the film. Actress Thora Birch, who played the lead role as Dani, was originally planned to repeat her role, although planning conflicts eventually prevented it. Sources later confirmed that Jason Marsden, who played the lead role as the black cat Binx, would not return either. Although there have been no official words that Omri Katz and Vinessa Shaw will repeat their roles as Max and Allison, neither of them is listed among the cast in the film.
When the Sanderson sisters return to Salem, they will see lots of fresh faces. The entire crew of Hokus pokus has lots of actors who are new to the beloved franchise. Whitney Peak, Lilia Buckingham and Belissa Escobedo star as Becca, Cassie and Izzy, with recent Emmy winner Hannah Waddingham, Tony Hale, Sam Richardson, Juju Brener, Froy Gutierrez, Taylor Paige Henderson and Nina Kitchen also linked. It has also been confirmed that RuPaul’s Drag Race stars Ginger Minj, Kornbread “The Snack” Jeté and Kahmora Hall will portray drag versions of Winifred, Mary and Sarah.
Adam Shankman is not directing
