The animated feature Strange world coming to Disney+ this Christmas season. The film only premiered on Thanksgiving, but it seems the studio has already planned its early debut on the streaming platform. Although the reason for this is quite obvious, the film was truly a disaster at the box office.
It only grossed $30.4 million at the domestic box office and earned a worldwide profit of $50.4 million, a huge loss for Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Strange World is heading to Disney+ this holiday week
Disney has officially announced that fans can finally watch Strange world from the comfort of their homes starting December 23rd. It follows the story of a family of adventurers who will explore the unknown surface of the world. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Jaboukie Young-White, Gabrielle Union and Lucy Liu, the animated film depicts a multi-generational conflict that each member of the family must resolve as they try to save the world.
Strange world is written by Qui Nguyen, the screenwriter of Raya and the Last Dragon, and directed by Don Hall. The film struggled to get to the top of the game and is expected to lose Disney a lot of money worth $100 million.
There have been many reasons why the film ended up being a tragedy, but the unanimous speculation was the studio’s lack of publicity. There wasn’t much buzz surrounding the film, so this makes fans question Disney’s intent in producing another animated film.
The narrative is surprisingly relevant in modern times, with characters from different backgrounds and orientations. It’s also a family-friendly sci-fi adventure with stunning graphics.

Why Disney quickly put the film on the streaming platform
Instead of forcing people to go to the movies, Disney eventually decided to bring the theater into people’s homes. Now it’s easier to access the movie with a simple click of a button. It is also strategically planned to come around Christmas time, so that the whole family can enjoy the film.
In this effort, Disney hopes that the animated film would perform better on the small screen than it did in theaters.
