The past year has been a good one for fans of Charlie Cox’s Daredevil. It wasn’t until last December, three years after Daredevil season 3 aired on Netflix and then was immediately canceled by the streaming service, that Cox made his long-awaited return as Matthew Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home. So this past summer, She-Hulk: Lawyer gave Cox the opportunity to both reprise Matt and officially step up as Daredevil, albeit in a new costume. Additionally, we learned that Cox will be back for both Echo and Daredevil: Born Again over the next few years, and now the actor has revealed how long the latter show will shoot and shared his thoughts on the big episode order.
After rumors of a Daredevil revival series is being put together, it was confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con that Daredevil: Born Again was on its way as part of the Phase 5 series. While Marvel shows available exclusively to Disney+ subscribers typically get six or nine episodes per season (though Loki and What if… ? are so far the only ones to have scored in other seasons), Born again received a whopping 18 episodes for just its first season. As such, Charlie Cox informed NME that he will be spending most of 2023 playing Marvel’s Man Without Fear, saying:
They told me, ‘We’re going to shoot in 2023.’ I said, “Great, when?” They said “All of 2023”. I start shooting in February and finish in December.
With 18 episodes straight off the bat, it makes sense that Charlie Cox will stay busy in the coming year with his Daredevil duties, as you can’t just knock out that much work quickly. Before Marvel Studios signed him on, Cox played Matt Murdock in all 39 episodes of the original Daredevil series, plus the eight-episode miniseries The defenders. It will be a long time before we know if another season is on the horizon Daredevil: Born Againhowever, regarding why this first season is so big, Cox offered the following speculation for the larger number of episodes:
I’m intrigued to discover why they’ve chosen to be 18. I imagine there’s going to be an element of it being like the old procedural show. Not necessarily case of the week, but something where we go deep into lawyer Matt Murdock and see what his life is like. If it’s done right and he really gets dirty in that world… I think there’s something pretty interesting about that, spending a lot of time in the everyday life of a superhero and really earning the moments when he sees fit.
With the original Daredevil series delivering 13 episodes per season, it’s not like there was a lack of opportunities to explore Matt Murdock’s legal profession and personal life, but if Charlie Cox is right, Daredevil: Born Again can put more emphasis on this in the middle of the superhero action. So far no specific plot details for Born again has been revealed to the public, but it will involve Daredevil once again teaming up with Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk, aka the Kingpin, who was brought back to the Marvel fold last year in Hawkeye. Born againits cast also includes The Many Saints of Newark stars Michael Gandolfini, Margarita Levieva and Sandrine Holt.
In front of Daredevil: Born Againwill premiere on Disney+ in early 2024, both Daredevil and Kingpin will appear in Echo, with the former reportedly looking for a former ally. Keep visiting CinemaBlend for more updates on Daredevil’s MCU future and other upcoming Marvel TV shows.
