Linux Mint 21.1 is now available for download

Linux Mint 21.1 ‘Vera’ is available for download, ahead of an official release announcement expected soon.

This point release of Linux Mint runs on top of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, and it includes a select selection of UI tweaks, bug fixes and performance improvements – although there are no major changes from the Linux Mint 21.1 beta released earlier this month (and if you’re using that beta you can upgrade to final release).

So what exactly is new?

Well, Linux Mint 21.1 comes with it Cinnamon 5.6 desktop environment by default. This version of Cinnamon offers a couple of new features, including a new Corner bar applet comes activated by default. Using Corner bar you can click at the very end of the bottom panel to hide all windows and immediately display the desktop.

You can enable a “peek on hover” effect in Corner bar settings (which can be accessed from the Mint applet interface or by right-clicking the Corner bar and select “preferences”). There you will also find effect blur and opacity controls, which allow you to create the type of effect you want.

As Linux Mint 21.1 removes the ‘show desktop’ applet from the bottom panel (like the new Corner bar re-implementing the functionality) there is a slight panel order change: Mint Menu remains at the far left of the bottom panel, but is now followed by a separator, and then by shortcuts for Nemo and Firefox:

A new dividing line between menu and launchers

Linux Mint 21.1 no longer sets icons for “Home” or “Trash” or the desktop by default. You can enable these (along with icons for installed drivers and other items) from Desktop icons settings if you miss them.

Speaking of icons, Linux Mint 21.1 features new folder icons. This is immediately noticeable to long-term users when they open Nemo file manager. Instead of a sea of muted green tones, Mint now uses bright yellow folder icons with a blue diagonal line in the lower corner. The ‘Desktop’ icon now reflects Cinnamon’s default layout.

New default folder icons (and they’re not green – shocker)

Also changed, Linux Mint 21.1 uses “aqua” as the default color accent. The (rather iconic) green synonymous with the distro has been retired, with Mint reasoning that it doesn’t need to use green everywhere to remind people that they’re using Linux Mint – they already know that!

There’s also a stylized new mouse pointer theme; and a variety of popular Linux icon sets, including Ubuntu’s Yaruthe perennially popular Papyrusand KDEs Breeze comes pre-installed – although the Mint-Y theme remains the default concept.

Elsewhere, Linux Mint 21 makes its mark Driver handler and Software Sources tool some new features, including the ability to run Driver handler in user mode (ie without needing a root password), and work offline. The update also introduces an ISO verification tool accessed by right-clicking an ISO image in Nemo.

Flatpak updates are now installed along with other updates in the Update handlerand Software manager The user interface has been refined to make it more obvious when software is Flatpak or a system package. One more shortcut Show the settings are now present in the desktop right-click context menu.
