How to download the iOS 16 developer beta right now

Apple has officially announced iOS 16, the next generation of its iPhone operating system. The latest iOS release promises some cool and exciting new features, including a fully customizable lock screen complete with widgets, shared iCloud photo libraries for families, Live Text in videos and more.

Although the final iOS 16 release will not be available until September, Apple has already released the first beta for developers to play with and make the apps ready, and it will not be long before a public beta arrives. If you want to try out the latest iOS 16 features, here’s how to sign up for the beta apps and download the latest pre-release software.

Early beta versions of major iOS releases are generally not available to the public, and iOS 16 is no exception. The first beta version of iOS 16 is only open to members of the Apple Developer Program, and this is likely to continue for the next few beta releases. Apple usually releases a public beta sometime in late June or early July, often in line with the second or third developer beta. At that time, anyone who wants to get it can sign up for Apple’s free beta software. It’s generally a good idea to wait for the public beta since that’s the point when Apple feels things are stable enough for non-developers to play with. But if you’ve eager to get the early iOS 16 release and willing to live with the risk, sign up for Apple’s developer app.

Back up your iPhone

Before installing an iOS beta, it is always a good idea to have an updated backup of your iPhone. Keep in mind that this is beta software, so things are much more likely to go wrong.

Also, Apple’s warranty does not cover an iPhone running an iOS beta. Should you encounter any issues with your iPhone, you will need to restore it to the latest public iOS release before bringing it in or submitting it for repair. It will require restoring iPhone to its new state, so you will want to make sure you have a backup in case this happens.

You will find instructions on how to do this in our article on how to back up your iPhone.

We strongly recommend backing up your Mac or PC in case you need to go back to the official iOS 15 version. You can’t restore a backup made from a newer version of iOS to an iPhone running an older version, and iOS automatically backs up iPhone to iCloud every 24 hours. Only the last three iCloud backups are retained, so it won’t be long before your iOS 15 backup is pushed out of rotation. Backing up your computer will ensure that you have a backup to fall back on in case you need to restore to iOS 15.

Install the iOS 16 beta configuration profile

Once your Apple Developer account is approved, or later, when the public beta is released, you can install the iOS 16 beta directly by downloading the appropriate configuration profile. This tells your iPhone that it is authorized to receive the beta and where to download it.

The steps to get the profile vary slightly depending on whether you are a developer or a public beta tester, but once you have installed the profile, the process of updating to iOS 16 beta is the same no matter what.

If you have participated in a beta program for iOS 15 or earlier, you still need to download a new configuration profile for iOS 16. Each major version of iOS uses a unique configuration profile, so if you only see one iOS 15.6 or iOS 15.7 beta appear, it is because you’re still using an iOS 15 beta profile.

Step 1: Use Safari on iPhone, go to the relevant website:

  • If you are a member of the Apple Developer Program, you can visit Apple’s developer beta page and sign in with your Apple ID.
  • If you are a public beta tester, go to Apple’s beta site (when available) and sign in with your Apple ID there.

Step 2: Download and install the configuration profile:

  • If you are an Apple developer, choose Install profile button in the iOS 16 beta section.
  • If you are a public beta tester, make sure that iOS the tab is selected from the horizontal menu bar, then scroll down and select Register your iOS device from Got started section, then select Download profile from the next page.

Step 9: Select Install from the menu that appears at the bottom of the screen.

Step 10: Select when prompted Restart to restart iPhone.

iPhone is now ready to download the latest iOS 16 beta over the air. But before you do that, you should take a backup in case something goes wrong.

Install iOS 16 beta

Once you have installed the iOS 16 configuration profile from either the Apple Developer Program or the Apple Beta Software Program (when available) and backed up your iPhone, you are ready to take the plunge and install iOS 16 Beta.

Updating to iOS 16 beta is done in the same way as any other iOS software update. The configuration profile you installed earlier tells your iPhone to get the beta software instead of looking for the latest iOS release.

Step 1: Open the iPhone settings app.

Step 2: Select General.

Step 3: Select Software update. After a few seconds, iOS 16 Beta should appear.

Step 4: Select Download and install to start the process.

It can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour or more to download iOS 16 beta, set it up, and then install it on your iPhone. Once the process is complete, iPhone will restart and take you through a series of welcome and setup screens, similar to those you will see when updating to a public release.

Once you have iOS 16 beta installed on your iPhone, you will be on track to get future iOS 16 beta updates as they become available. There is nothing you need to do but repeat these steps above to check for the latest beta software update and install it when it becomes available.
