UPSC NDA 2023 Syllabus and Exam Pattern: Candidates must be familiar with the UPSC NDA Syllabus 2023 to avoid any kind of stress/confusion at any stage of the recruitment process. UPSC NDA Exam Pattern 2023

  • The tasks in the written exam will only consist of objective questions.
  • The question papers for Mathematics and Part B of the General Aptitude Test will be set bilingually in Hindi as well as English.
  • As per the UPSC NDA marking scheme, there will be negative marking of one-third (0.33) for every wrong answer marked by the candidates. Also, if a candidate gives more than one answer, it will be treated as a wrong answer even if one of the answers given happens to be correct and there will be the same penalty.

Analytical geometry of two and three dimensions

Rectangular Cartesian coordinate system. Distance formula. Equation of a line in different forms. The angle between two lines. The distance of a point from a line. Differential calculus

Integral calculus and differential calculus

Integration as the inverse of differentiation, integration by substitution and by parts, standard integrals involving algebraic expressions, trigonometric, exponential and hyperbolic functions. Evaluation of definite integrals – determination of areas of planar regions bounded by curves – applications

Vector algebra

Vectors in two and three dimensions, magnitude and direction of a vector. Unit and zero vectors, addition of vectors, scalar multiplication of a vector, scalar product or dot product of two vectors. Vector product or cross product of two vectors. Applications – work done by a force and moment of force and in geometric problems

Statistics and probability

Statistics: Classification of data, Frequency distribution, cumulative frequency distribution—examples. Graphical representation – histogram, pie chart, frequency polygon – examples. Measures of central tendency – mean, median and mode. Variance and standard deviation – determination and comparison. Correlation and regression.

Probability: Random experiment, outcome and associated sample space, events, mutually exclusive and exhaustive events, impossible and certain events. Association and intersection of events. Complementary, elementary and compound events. Definition of probability – classical and statistical – examples. Elementary Theorems of Probability – Simple Problems.

Grammar and usage, vocabulary, comprehension and coherence in extended text to test the candidate’s English skills.

General knowledge

  • Physics: Physical properties and states of matter, mass, weight, volume, density and specific gravity, Archimedes’ principle, pressure barometer. The motion of objects, velocity and acceleration, Newton’s laws of motion, force and momentum, parallelogram of forces, etc.
  • Chemistry: Physical and chemical changes. Elements, mixtures and compounds, symbols, formulas and simple chemical equations, law of chemical combination (except problems). Properties of air and water, etc.
  • General science: The difference between living and non-living. Basis of life – cells, protoplasm and tissues. Growth and reproduction in plants and animals, etc.
  • History, Freedom Movement, etc: Freedom movement in India. Elementary Study of Indian Constitution and Administration. Elementary knowledge of Five Year Plans in India. Panchayati Raj, Cooperatives and Community Development. Bhoodan, Sarvodaya, National Integration and Welfare State, Basic Teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, etc.
  • Geography: The Earth, its shape and size. Latitudes and longitudes, time concept. International Date Line. The Earth’s Motions and their Effects, &c.
  • Current events: Knowledge of important events that have happened in India in recent years. Current important world events, prominent personalities – both Indian and international, including those related to cultural activities and sports.

UPSC NDA Intelligence and Personality Test

The SSB procedure consists of two stages in the selection process – stage I and stage II. Candidates who must pass stage I may participate in stage II. The details are:

  • Step I comprises the officer intelligence assessment (OIR) tests are the Picture Perception Description Test (PP&DT). The candidates will be shortlisted based on a combination of performance in the OIR test and PP&DT.
  • Stage II includes interviews, group testing tasks, psychological tests and the conference. These tests will be held over 4 days. The details of these tests will be notified on the official website.

The personality of a candidate is judged by three different assessors i.e. Interview Officer (IO), Group Testing Officer (GTO) and the Psychologist. There is no separate grade weight for each test. The grades are given by assessors only after analyzing the performance of the candidate as a whole in all the tests. In addition, grades are awarded for Conference based on the first performance of the candidates in the three techniques and the board’s decision. All of these are given equal weight.
