Biology practical syllabus grade 12 2022–2023: The Central Board for Secondary Education focuses on the overall development of candidates in each stream. Thus, both written theory assignments and practical exams are important for candidates to score well. Therefore, CBSE Class 12 practical and project work form an important part of CBSE Class 12 Biology syllabus since practical and investigative projects together carry 30 marks towards the annual board exam score while the theory paper is carried out for 70 marks.

CBSE class 12 practical exams for 2022-23 session is scheduled from 2nd January 2023 to 14th February 2023. Therefore, students must be aware of the theory parts and practical and project work alike.

  1. List of experiments
  2. Prepare a temporary mount to observe pollen germination.
  3. Study the plant population density using the quadratic method.
  4. Study the plant population frequency using the quadratic method.
  5. Prepare a temporary onion root tip mount to study mitosis.
  6. Isolate DNA from available plant material such as spinach, green pea seeds, papaya, etc.
  7. Study and observe the following (Spotting):
  8. Flowers adapted to pollination by different agencies (wind, insects, birds).
  9. Pollen germination on stigma through a permanent slide or scanning electron micrograph.
  10. Identification of stages of germ cell development, i.e. TS in testis and TS in ovary through permanent slides (from grasshopper/mouse).
  11. Meiosis in onion bud cell or locust testis through permanent slides.
  12. TS of blastula through permanent slides (mammals).
  13. Mendelian inheritance using seeds of different colors/sizes of any plant.
  14. Prepared pedigree of all the genetic traits such as tongue rolling, blood types, ear lobes, widow’s peak and color blindness.
  15. Controlled pollination – emasculation, marking and posing.
  16. Common disease-causing organisms such as Ascaris, Entamoeba, Plasmodium, any fungus that causes ringworm through permanent slides, models or virtual images or specimens. Comment on symptoms of diseases that they cause.
  17. Model specimens showing symbiont association in root modules of legumes, Cuscuta on host, lichen.
  18. Flash card models showing examples of homologous and analogous organs.

General guidelines

  • The practical exam will last two hours. A separate list of ten experiments is included here.
  • The written practical exam for these students will be conducted at the time of the practical exam for all other students.
  • The written test will last 30 minutes.
  • The question paper given to the students must be legibly typed. It must contain a total
  • of 15 practical skill-based questions of very short answers. A student must answer 10 questions.
  • A writer may be allowed to such students as per CBSE examination rules.
  • All questions included in the question paper should be related to the practical things listed.
  • Each question should take approx. two minutes to be answered.
  • These students are also required to maintain a practice file. A student is expected to do so

record at least five of the listed experiments according to the specific instructions for each

Subject. These exercises should be checked and signed by an internal examiner.

  • The format for writing any experiment in the practical file should include objectives, equipment required, simple theory, procedure, related practical skills, precautions, etc.
  • Questions can be generated jointly by external/internal examiners and used for

evaluation.

  • The viva questions may include questions based on basic theory / principle / concept, equipment / materials / chemicals required, procedure, precautions, sources of error etc.

(All experiments) Beaker, flask, petri plates, soil from different places – sand, loamy, loamy,

small potted plants, aluminum foil, brush, test tube, starch solution, iodine, ice cubes,

Bunsen burner/alcohol lamp/water bath, large flowers, Maize inflorescence, model of

developmental stages highlighting morula and blastula of frog, pearls/seeds of various

shapes/size/texture Ascaris, Cactus/Opuntia (model).

  1. List of practical exercises
  2. Study of flowers adapted to pollination by different agencies (wind, insects).
  3. Identification of TS of morula or blastula of frog (model).
  4. Study of Mendelian inheritance pattern using beads/seeds of different sizes/texture.
  5. Preparation of a pedigree of genetic traits such as tongue rolling, color blindness.
  6. Study of emasculation, marking and bagging by trying out a controlled pollination exercise.
  7. Identify common disease-causing organisms such as Ascaris (model) and learn some common symptoms of the disease they cause.
  8. Comment on the morphological adaptations of plants found under xerophytic conditions.

Note: The above exercises can be done experientially instead of recording observations.
