Will the MAPPA anime return for another bout?

Ahead of the S1 finale, what are the chances of the Chainsaw Man anime series being renewed for season 2 by Studio MAPPA?

Today, December 27th, the Chainsaw Man anime series concludes with episode 12, season 1 finale around the world via Crunchyroll.

But as soon as the end credits roll on episode 12, fans will immediately look to the future and wonder if the series will return for another broadcast.

While Chainsaw Man Season 2 remains TBA, it should only be a matter of time before MAPPA officially confirms that the anime is coming back for another go – here’s everything fans need to know.

Chainsaw Man Season 2 Renewal Status Explored

As previously mentioned, Chainsaw Man has yet to be officially renewed for Season 2 by Studio MAPPA, the production team behind the anime adaptation.

However, Chainsaw Man fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that another season of the anime will very likely be produced, with rumors of the production decision already circulating on social media.

Popular anime leaker JaymesHanson already has claimed that work on the second course has already started; he earlier reported that season 1 was intended to be a split cour production, but the decision was made to reduce this to a one cour broadcast.

Colleagues ChifuyuMatsun0 has also stated that Season 2 will be released in 2024; However, this information has yet to be officially confirmed by the Chainsaw’s production team.

What we can say with certainty is that there is enough source material for season 2, and the series should easily prove to be popular enough to merit a new broadcast on MAPPA.

Ahead of the season 1 finale, Chainsaw Man episode 12 is expected to adapt up to volume 5, chapter 39 of Tatsuya Endo’s original manga. Excellent news for fans is that as of December 2022, a total of 12 complete Tankobon volumes have been published in Japan; volume 13 is set for release on January 4, 2023.

This means that there is enough source material for production on Season 2 to start right away, and with the manga recently entering its second phase; there should be plenty of content available for a third season as well.

The chainsaw would also prove to be popular enough to justify a new production. The series scores an impressive 8.8/10 MyAnimeList4.5/5 on Anime Planet, 8.7/10 on IMDB, 82% on Rotten Tomatoes and 86% on Anilist.

Interestingly, this not only makes Chainsaw Man the third highest rated Fall slate anime on MAL, but also the second highest rated MAPPA production of all time – behind only Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 1.

“The action was great, the character design was great, the voice acting was amazing, and the animation was amazing. MAPPA is on steroids. Although some improvements could be made in the CG work on part of the main character. You’ll understand what I mean when you see it. Except the direction was great. If any notes are to be taken from the trailers, there’s a lot to be hyped for in the upcoming episodes.” – User review, via IMDB.

Overall, it should only be a matter of time before Chainsaw Man is officially renewed for Season 2. As noted by AnimeGeek, Season 2 could be announced at either the February 2023 Chainsaw Man Anime Exhibition or the May 2023 MAPPA exhibition event.

If you’d like to catch up on the original manga while we wait for Season 2 news, physical copies are available via Amazon, Book Depository, Waterstones and Bookshop.
