Which is the better summer 2022 Isekai Anime?

The anime season in the summer of 2022 is now well underway, and as with almost every season in the last decade, there are several isekai titles among the series. Two of these isekai shows that have gotten the most buzz are My Isekai life: I got another grade class and became the strongest sage in the world and Uncle from another world (the latter also popularly known by its Japanese title, Isekai Ojisan).

Both My Isekai life and Uncle from another world has already premiered, and fans of isekai or fantasy-anime as a whole may well ask themselves which one can offer the best viewing experience, because despite sharing some of the obvious genre communities, these programs are quite different from each other when it comes to applies to history and tone. Here’s how each series has evolved so far and what the audience can expect going forward.

My Isekai Life is a classic fantasy adventure with a surprisingly sweet twist

Sano Yuji is a Japanese business worker whose existence centers around his work. But when he restarts the PC after it flashes with a message to be summoned to another world, he inadvertently accepts this summons and is transported to an imaginative realm full of warriors, bandits and all kinds of creatures, from slime to dragons . Now Yuji must wake up from this crazy “dream” and return home to his precious paperwork – even though the mysterious cult known as Blue Moon presents an exciting mystery, and as both a monster tamer and a sage, Yuji is well equipped to uncover more while saving many innocent spectators along the way.

In many ways, My Isekai life is a classic isekai show with swords and sorcery with a proven focus on action / adventure, and none of the characters really break the shape of what has come before in the isekai genre. One main criticism may actually be that the series both looks and feels quite generic in many ways; Yuji is probably an overwhelmed hero who can save girls in need and entire villages thanks to his magical abilities, while at the same time he seems to have a somewhat limited emotional range.

Another potential problem for the audience is that although the premise sounds like it may be a comedy, this possibility is more or less wasted, as My Isekai life plays its story quite right. It could have been a lot of humor to take out of a character who was transported to another world who would much rather return to his crowded inbox than save young virgins or become friends with mucus, but still My Isekai life miss out on this potential by being a title with valuable little in the way of more light-hearted food.

Nevertheless, a big draw that helps to balance the self-seriousness of the series is, at least to some extent, the slime itself. These are not depicted as monstrous entities, nor just lots of goo without differentiating traits or personalities to speak of. Instead, they are portrayed as enthusiastic and adorable little side characters, each with a peculiarity in appearance or manner, such as one with an eye patch and another with an impressive mustache. They even have their own names and are voiced by separate voice actors. For many, the slime can end up being the highlight of the entire show.

Uncle from Another World is a comedy bordering on parody

After 17 years of being in a coma, Takaoka Takafumi’s uncle (known only to the viewer as “Ojisan”) has woken up to a whole new world – one where SEGA tragically no longer makes video game consoles and it is possible to make a living by get views on homemade YouTube videos. But while in a coma, he was actually transported to another world, where he killed monsters and rescued beautiful young women. Nevertheless, in that isekai world, Takafumi’s uncle was seen as so ugly that he himself was a scary monster, and he made several bad choices there, including leaving a beautiful elf whose tsundere tendencies only confused and irritated him.

In stark contrast to My Isekai life, Uncle from another world is an obvious comedy whose content often reaches parody levels, largely thanks to the satirical commentary on anime and video game tropes. Ojisan and Takafumi also quickly realize that they can take advantage of their uncle’s magical powers and objects, which are still available and make real life much more convenient. From becoming internet stars to not having to pay for shipping, the couple finds many ways to use certain aspects of the isekai world in today’s Japan.

Uncle from another world may have more in common with reverse-isekai stories such as The devil is a part-time employee! (also about to air for a second season) than more traditional isekai tales like Sword art online, Re: Null or in fact, My Isekai life. Its sense of humor is likely to appeal more to those who think anime has reached a point of isekai oversaturation, or who usually do not like isekai titles at all, but who like comedies or just light-hearted fantasy material.

But, Uncle from another worldthe jokes have to stay healthy to be fun throughout the run – after all, it can not rely solely on SEGA jokes. Also, for those who have a greater penchant for action or adventure, the series may be too dialogue-driven. It also remains to be seen whether the anime will involve other main characters from the fantasy world to expand the reverse isekai story, or whether they will only ever be seen in brief retrospective as supporting cast members, the latter of which may further limit the game. show in scope.

While both My Isekai life and Uncle from another world has its pros and cons, it seems likely that the former will bore bored anime fans who have seen enough isekai titles to last them a lifetime, even with the bonus of its lovable slimes. In the meantime, though Uncle from another world has yet to prove that it can last the distance, its comic version of the genre may have more widespread appeal to Western audiences, even (or especially) for viewers looking for something less on the generic isekai side.
