2022 has definitely been a roller coaster ride for the world and for the anime realm as well. Many of the fan-favorite anime have returned to the screen once again. Some new storylines and anime appeared, which fans had a blast watching. Along with some amazing new titles, several enduring hits have made a comeback for fans to enjoy. There are tons of eagerly awaited shows throughout each season and almost all of them have been really big hits. But there’s no denying the fact that not every show can be a hit, and while 2022 has seen some truly exceptional anime, it’s also had its fair share of duds.
Sometimes the debut of a new anime may not meet viewers’ expectations. At the same time, some returning anime made a comeback and missed completely. Regardless, many anime shows this year fell short of their potential and disappointed avid viewers. Here are some of the most disappointing anime of 2022.
When Bubble was first announced, everyone was extremely excited about it. Considering it came from one of the most renowned studios, Wit Studio, fans thought it was destined to be a hit from the start. There is no doubt in admitting that the soundtrack and visuals are amazing and worth admiring. However, pretty pictures are all it has. If one is looking for a good plot and character arc, this will not be your cup of tea. While the show is set in a post-apocalyptic realm where children enjoy parkour, the story mainly focuses on a boy who is saved by a girl with mysterious powers. Despite having a gripping premise, the hype soon died as the story felt extremely flat and audiences couldn’t feel invested enough to see it through to the end.
5/6 Shikimori is not just a cutie
One of the most anticipated anime of 2022 was Shikimori is not just a cutie. Many thought it would be on the same level as My boyfriend in the rom-com genre. However, it was anything but that. Instead, it has truly developed into one of the most underwhelming series of the year in 2022. Looking at other excellent anime, Shikimori is not just a cutie simply fell short in almost every area to achieve it. The anime has nothing to keep the viewers coming back for the next episodes. With little drama or comedy, the plot was extremely uneventful, and no endearing characters outside of Shikimori himself. The anime just feels extremely distasteful. Even for Shikimori, many thought she was too flawless, making her extremely unrealistic to relate to or mess with. Although a feel-good series, even that couldn’t make up for what it lacked.
4/6 Vampire in the garden
Despite not originating from a manga, Vampire in the garden isn’t the worst anime on the list. However, it also failed to live up to the high expectations people had for it. While the soundtrack, art, and animation are all breathtaking, it’s the characters and stories that are lacking. The anime takes place in a society where vampires have almost wiped out humanity and have forced them to live in a fortified city. After seeing the queen of all vampires single-mindedly defend the protagonist Momo’s companions during the vampires’ attack, he finally decides to follow her home. The two quickly bond and decide to search for a utopia where vampires and humans can coexist. It takes a lot of introspection, detailed world-building, and in-depth character development to handle such a difficult plot. This show sorely lacked that. The characters, especially Momo, were one-dimensional and his decisions never felt believable, making the show feel empty and forgettable.
3/6 Futsal boys!!!
When it comes to sports anime, there are two things that are incredibly important to its success, one is the way sports are depicted, and the other is how the characters are portrayed. Characters in successful and beloved sports anime tend to fall into one of three categories: lovable (as in Haikyuu!! or Free!), complicated and well-developed (as in Run with the wind), or completely crazy (as in Kuroko’s Basketball).
Futsal boys!!!! doesn’t really have any characters that fit any of those descriptions or that accomplish anything truly notable on the show. This makes it even harder to root for these characters, as the audience doesn’t even feel connected to them. So, if we talk about the sport itself, Futsal is a legitimate sport, which is quite challenging. The majority of the moves depicted were wrong, although the names of the set pieces were mostly correct. Thus, it’s one of those anime where you don’t learn about the sport, nor do you get anything about the characters, making it a waste of time for the viewers.
2/6 Requiem of the Rose King
Requiem of the Rose King is one of the most acclaimed shojo manga that tells the story of an intersex Richard III from his very turbulent youth during the War of the Roses to adulthood. It is an absolutely fantastic manga that is emotionally deep, graphically impressive and full of fascinating historical details. Requiem of the Rose King got a significant amount of buzz, given that it’s been a while since shojo fans got any good brand new series. Many viewers believed that this highly anticipated adaptation would herald the grand return of this entire genre. Unfortunately, this anime fell short in every way. Unfortunately, the anime couldn’t live up to its manga. The whole plot was extremely convoluted and rushed. In addition, the anime leaves out a number of crucial moments and elements that give the narrative its complexity and depth.
The animation is lackluster at best and hideous at worst, and in certain sections the scenes aren’t even animated. Rather, they depict the story through still images, which is extremely disappointing and jarring to a viewer. These issues were just a little too much for viewers to turn a blind eye to and eventually they lost interest leading to the tragic demise of this series.
1/6 The Rising Of The Shield Hero – Season 2
Ever since its release, The Rising Of The Shield Hero quickly ranked among the most famous isekai, rivaling perhaps famous names such as Sword art online and Re: Zero. All the hype from the first season led fans to expect even top-notch work from the season as well. In fact, many believed it would be considered one of the best, if not the greatest, anime of the year. The story follows Naofumi, who was suddenly summoned to another world along with a few others, to protect it from repeated invasions. He immediately has the powers of the shield bestowed upon him, only they feel like those from a game he once played.
Unfortunately, that was not the case this season. It somehow turned out to be one of the worst of the year. Almost everything the viewers adored in the first season was done away with in season 2. Instead, the series became another uninspired, bland isekai with the same sad plot and cast. The series as a whole has become a disaster due to the outcome of this sequel, and viewers who were counting down the days are now quickly losing faith in it.
