As for the story, Jigokuraku centers on Gabimaru, who was once exalted as the strongest ninja and has now quit his trade thus breaking the laws of his village. After he was captured, Gabimaru claimed that he had nothing to live for.
However, given his phenomenal training levels, he inadvertently survived several executions, ranging from attempted beheadings to burning at the stake. He is later told that he will gain absolution and freedom if he brings back the Elixir of Life from an island rumored to be the Buddhist Pure Land, Sukhavati.
With renewed hope and a desire to reunite with his beloved wife, Gabimaru goes to the island with the executioner Yamada Asaemon Sagiri. But when they get there, they meet other death row inmates with the same goal. Not only that, there are a host of unknown creatures and island-ruling hermits waiting for them.
