A new collection of Pokémon Mash-up fan art sees the adorable pocket monsters fused with characters from across the pop culture landscape.
The photo series was uploaded to Reddit by artist Gabe Rod, and contains several Pokémon who dress up as iconic superheroes, including Mimikyu as Raven from Teen Titans Go !, Pikachu as Marvel’s Doctor Strange, Zubat as DC’s Batman and Honchkrow as Fumikage Tokoyami from My Hero Academia. However, not all mash-ups involve characters from superhero media; Lickilicky puts on Buu’s outfit Dragon Ball Zis Pikachu fused together Assassin Classroom‘s Korosensei and Alakazam make their best Severus Snape impression. Especially in one of the pieces, the onion on Bulbasaur’s back has blossomed into a superplant monster from Super Mario Bros..
The very popular Pokémon franchises have always inspired a wealth of fan-made content, and mixed pieces of fan art with the creatures, such as Rod’s collection, are becoming more and more common. Other recent examples include an illustration showing the fearsome water Pokémon Gyrados that gives Studio Ghibli’s Ponyo a ride and a comic image showing Magikarp achieving Naruto’s dream of becoming Hokage of the Village Hidden in the Leaves.
The first video games in the franchise – Pocket Samples: Red and Greenwhich was later renamed Pokémon Red and Blue – was released in 1996. Since then, over 120 games have been under Pokémon Umbrella has been released and a competitive trading card game. There has also been a wealth of anime series and movies, manga, books, toys and other types of merchandise.
There have been many recent developments for Pokémon franchise beyond impressive mash-up fan art, such as the announcement of the Lost Origin expansion for the trading card game, which will mark the return of a popular mechanic. Most notable are the latest video games, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, is expected to launch exclusively for the Nintendo Switch later this year. They want the same open world style of play that is seen in Pokémon Legends: Arceus and a new Spain-inspired region.
Furthermore, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet will introduce the ninth generation of pocket monsters. The announcement trailer ended with a picture of the new starters, Fuecoco, Sprigatito and Quaxly. The three quickly became the focus of both huge fan excitement and passionate fan speculation, with a special interest in what Pokémon will look like in their final development.
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet launches November 18 exclusively on the Nintendo Switch. Many of Pokémon the anime series, including the latest title in the franchise, Pokémon Ultimate Journeys: The Seriesis available for streaming on Netflix.
