One Piece Film Red Anime Movie celebrates passing 18 billion yen at the Japanese box office

One Piece Movie Red finally opened in theaters in English-speaking countries over the weekend, breaking franchise records at least in the US. But we will have to wait for official figures to come from these countries to really know how well Film Red did. Meanwhile, the official Japanese Twitter account for the film celebrated hitting another domestic milestone today with an illustration from the series creator Eiichiro Oda himself.

Japanese ticket tracking Kogyo Tsushinsha confirmed the news, which reveals that as of November 6, One Piece Movie Red has brought in ¥18.04 billion ($129.12 million) on the back of over 13.01 million tickets sold. Film Red continues to inch closer Howl’s Moving Castleits whopping 19.60 billion yen, with the Miyazaki-directed anime film ranking 5th on anime of all time and 8th on the overall film charts in Japan.

With Suzume and Wakanda forever released this weekend, Film Red is set to lose a lot of screens, with a bulk of them being premium IMAX screens, though One Piece the film continues to sail along at No. 1 on the weekend charts. Let’s see if Luffy and Uta can hold their own against Makoto Shinkai.

One Piece Movie Red opened in Japanese theaters on August 6. Crunchyroll released the film in English-speaking countries in Novemberstarting with Australia and New Zealand on November 3rd then followed by the US and Canada on November 4th.
