KADOKAWA Announces Acquisition of Anime News Network‘s Media Business

KADOKAWA CORPORATION (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and Board Member: Takeshi Natsuno; Hereafter “KADOKAWA“) announced today that the company has reached an agreement with Anime News Network Inc. (Headquarters: Quebec Province, Canada, President: Christopher Macdonaldhereinafter “ANN”) with respect to KADOKAWAmajority acquisition of ANN’s media operations.

Founded in 1998, ANN engages in the media industry with a focus on distributing the latest news on Japanese anime, manga, light novels and other entertainment content to its English-speaking market user base in North America and other parts of the world. ANN also operates a content database and community forums where users can interact on the site and has established its position as one of the largest platforms specialized in its field in North America.

Our decision to proceed with the acquisition is intended to strengthen further KADOKAWAits global marketing initiatives related to the digital and physical products handled by BOOK☆WALKER Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Tokyo) which operates an English e-book online store (BOOK WALKER Global), NEW PRINTLLC (Headquarters: New York, hereinafter “YP”) engaged in extensive English publishing of manga and light novels, etc. in North America, and J-Novel Club LLC (Headquarters: Texas) engaged in English e-book publishing of Japanese light novels and operation of a digital subscription service platform in the English-speaking market among others. The transaction is intended to be carried out through the acquisition of a newly established company under KADOKAWAits American holding company KADOKAWA WORLD ENTERTAINMENT, INC. (Headquarters: Delaware, hereinafter “KWE”) of all the related business assets of ANN, scheduled to be completed by the end of the year. The transaction, the value of which has not been disclosed, will not have a material impact on
KADOKAWA‘s consolidated business results. After the completion of the transaction, we intend to further expand all the group’s businesses in the English-speaking market by strengthening the cooperation in promotion and other areas between each of the group’s mentioned businesses.
