Anime Expo 2022 | A first-hand look at the inevitable

Survive a game without rules and without escape

Aksys Games Panel was among the many highlights during the Anime Expo 2022 weekend. Arranged on day 2, the panel presented new trailers for upcoming titles along with announcements for new games. Among the titles announced were Unavoidablea visual novel that forces players to survive a twisted game.

Developed by Dreamloop Games, Unavoidable is a visual survival novel that follows in the footsteps of Danganronpa series. Following the announcement, members of the media were invited to try a pre-Alpha version of the game. This is my first look at Unavoidable along with my thoughts on the overall experience.

An introduction to Unavoidable

Unavoidable is a thriller on par with Octopus games and Battle Royale. 11 people from all over the world have been kidnapped and forced to participate in a reality TV show. There are no rules, everything goes and the last person standing will receive the cash prize. The players will take on the role of Harrison, one of the participants who has been kidnapped. They must navigate the social structure of the group and work to survive. It will not be easy and some players will do whatever it takes to win.

My Playthrough av Unavoidable

I meet Steve Stewart, co-founder and communications manager at Dreamloop Games, after the panel to learn more about Unavoidable. When I took me to a private room at their booth in the exhibition hall, I got the chance to play a selection of the game.

The demo is set once after everyone has arrived on the island. Paranoia and tension dominate the group as everyone suspects each other of murder. Despite the tension, Harrison tries to connect more with Mia. Unfortunately, this is disturbed when two participants are found killed. Players are given the task of looking for clues that can help solve who was responsible for the killings.

The demo session highlighted the visual details and focused on the narrative direction along with the detective gameplay elements. Absent was the narrative direction and other game elements that will be part of the overall experience.

Last thoughts on Unavoidable

Although it was a limited demo, it gave a good idea of what to expect in the finished game. Visually, it is very appealing and remains true to the anime influence. The dialogue was well written and easy to follow, which gave the players a good idea of what was going on. Looking for clues was also a challenge, but one that makes you examine every corner of the level. Overall, this is an experience thriller fans will enjoy when it is released.

Unavoidable will be launched sometime in 2023. It will be available for the PlayStation and Xbox consoles along with the Nintendo Switch plus the PC.
